Gavin Newsom States He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he will make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 elections conclude.

"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," the governor remarked when asked about seriously considering a presidential run post the 2026 ballots. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."

The governor's tenure as California's leader ends in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he cautioned that any decision is a long way off.

"Fate will determine that," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic

He has emerged as a prominent adversary of the Trump administration, using his online platforms and championing a initiative that would expand the party's House seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This move has invited attacks from political opponents.

Controversy Over Funds

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a weekend segment on a major news network. The secretary revealed plans to pull federal funds from the state and threatened revoking the state's ability to grant CDLs.

"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from the state," he said, after a recent tragic collision in the state involving an non-citizen semi truck driver that caused three deaths and casualties.

Newsom's office highlighted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the driver's employment on several occasions, which allowed him to secure a commercial driver's license under federal law.

Duffy had before stated he was blocking additional funds from the state for not enforcing English language requirements for commercial drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"One-time television figure, now transportation chief, still doesn't understand federal law," the governor's team said in a previous comment addressing the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: California CDL holders had a death rate much lower than the national average. Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."

Polling Data and Future Prospects

A recently conducted study found that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters believed that the governor must consider running for president in the next election cycle. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has increased to an typical level of a third from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has fallen from an average of previous highs to 38.4%.

In previous months, the governor stated while on a trip several battleground states that he had "no idea" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He noted his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.

"The notion that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, alone, extraordinary," he commented. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
