Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials demonstrated anger after Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be taken into custody and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their release of a disputed video.
The Message That Triggered the Controversy
The recorded message, published on Tuesday, features six Democratic congress members who formerly worked in armed forces or intelligence roles.
"Like us, you all swore an pledge to safeguard and support this constitution," the officials declared in the 90-second video. "At present, the dangers to our constitution aren't just from abroad, but from right here at home. Our regulations are explicit, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can decline improper directives, you should refuse unlawful commands. No one has to follow orders that break the law or our national charter."
The Former President's Angry Response
The clip appeared to trigger a furious response from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he wrote: "This represents really serious, and Risky to our Country. Their statements cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Respond
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, House Democratic leader published a joint statement denouncing the comments.
"Violent politics has no role in the United States," they wrote. "Congress members who appeared in the video all acted our country with exceptional national pride and distinction. We strongly censure Donald Trump's offensive and harmful calls for execution against elected officials, and urge GOP representatives to strongly do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the security of these representatives and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged social media posts and retract his violent rhetoric before he leads to violence," the announcement stated.
Officials' Firm Response
The officials who were featured in the video also published a declaration.
"We serve as veterans and national security professionals who love this country and made an vow to safeguard and uphold the founding document of the United States," they stated. "This commitment continues forever, and we intend to keep it. No threat, pressure, or call for violence will deter us from that fundamental obligation."
"What's most telling is that the former president views it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to restate the legal requirements," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the national charter and responsibility to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "All citizens must unite and condemn the ex-president's demands for our death and political violence. This is a time for principled stance."
Additional Partisan Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's remarks and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is requesting the capital punishment of public representatives."
He continued: "This represents an clear THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this immediately and without qualification."
The Conservative official defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", labeling the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This represents very harmful, you have prominent officials of the legislature telling military personnel to disobey orders, I think that represents historic in American history."
The GOP official also according to sources stated to the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the violation of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to examine the terminology and decide all that."
White House Response
During a administration briefing on later that day, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson responded: "Absolutely not."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the official said. "We see active officials of the American legislature who coordinated to orchestrate a recorded statement to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers encouraging them to ignore the commander in chief's legal commands."
She added: "The integrity of our defense system depends on the chain of command, and if that structure is compromised, it can lead to fatalities, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are basically promoting."
