An esteemed Russian army officer has been declared dead following an blast in Moscow, according to reports from authorities.

The attack happened on Monday morning when an IED concealed beneath a vehicle exploded, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.

The committee stated that one possible explanation involves the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has remained silent.

Scene of the Attack

Officials have been are examining the scene, which is reportedly in a southern district of the metropolis.

Reports indicate the detonation occurred in a parking area close to a residential building.

Series of Incidents

Since the onset of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military personnel have been targeted within Moscow.

This latest event comes after other notable incidents, for instance:

• General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
• General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a device placed on a scooter was detonated remotely.

While a Ukrainian source previously attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are rarely publicly admitted as a matter of policy.

Hostilities has increasingly seen clandestine operations extending into the streets of the Russian capital.

The probe into General Sarvarov's death continues to be ongoing.
