A Story of Surprising Generosity: The Time a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground

During the year 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed I would book accommodation upon arrival, however once I got there, a major event was happening and all the budget hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of just sleep at the airport – but quickly found the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes 24 hours. Unsure of what my next move should be and growing worried, I boarded public transport and found myself drifting near the casino, believing I might spend the night in a place that stayed open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape to succeed at a crucial interview the next morning, however, being a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.

It seems I seemed lost because a woman spotted me wandering around the city and wondered whether I needed help. I explained my situation and right away she offered I could crash on the ground in her student dorm at the local university – which was perfect, given that my my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering some food: one of the filled rolls she brought back her work shift. I was able to use the bathroom and a protected spot and safe to spend the night.

Looking back, it’s clear to me what a big chance she accepted as a woman letting a guy she had only just encountered stay in her room. In those days I existed within my male privilege bubble and was oblivious to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she did that – and remain deeply appreciative.

I never did study at that university, and I didn’t meet her again, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of generosity. My sincere desire is that life has repaid her good deed abundantly. We could all use more individuals like that woman.
